Our Background
Curtis Bay Medical Waste Services was conceived, designed and built in cooperation with members of the Maryland Hospital Association in 1991 to provide a regional solution to the medical waste management requirements with the goal of building a facility to provide local specialty waste services and eliminating the need for each facility to provide their own incineration services.
Headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, Curtis Bay Medical Waste Services provides comprehensive medical waste solutions including collection, transfer, transportation, recycling, waste reduction, sharps management, disposal, and consulting services to hospitals, medical offices, pharmacies and other healthcare providers. The company is dedicated to delivering customized, professional responses to all medical waste disposal challenges. Curtis Bay owns state-of-the-art medical waste processing and material management technology, and continues to invest in research and sustainable waste management solutions that generate the lowest carbon footprint. As an industry leader, Curtis Bay is focused on safety, compliance, and customer service.

Allen Ruttenberg, COO
Mr. Allen Ruttenberg joined the Curtis Bay Medical Waste Services team in July 2016 as the Mid Atlantic District Manager focused on the overall leadership of Sales and Operations in the Virginia, North & South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee region. In February 2018 he stepped into the Vice President of Sales and Marketing role to lead the Marketing, Inside Sales, Key Regional Accounts, and New Product Development teams as well as develop strategies that will motivate and drive success. With over 18 years of experience in the environmental services sector, Mr. Ruttenberg has held leadership roles at some of the industry’s largest waste services companies.
Prior to Curtis Bay, Mr. Ruttenberg was an East Region Director for Republic Services which covered 16 states and Puerto Rico, and had direct leadership of Municipal Services generating over $700 million in annualized revenue. He also served as Area Sales Manager for Republic Services in the North-East Region, including responsibility for overall growth in Commercial, Industrial and Municipal lines of business covering 7 States and generating $450 million in annual revenue.
He is best known for his ability to drive profitable results through team building, market segmentation, strategic selling and designing customer facing programs to create a one-of-a-kind customer experience. Allen’s current focus at Curtis Bay is driving organic growth, expanding service offerings and enhancing customer experience. Mr. Ruttenberg holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Psychology from Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania and a Six Sigma Certification from Villanova University. Allen currently lives in Charlotte, NC with his Wife and 2 children.
Karol Round, CFO
Karol Round joined the Curtis Bay Medical Waste Services team in 2021 as the Chief Financial Officer. Prior to Curtis Bay, she served in several leadership roles at Republic Services for 14 years, most recently as Vice President of Finance. She was responsible for all finance support activities for Operations, Fleet, Safety, Sales, Customer Experience, Marketing and Revenue Management overseeing $10B+ in revenue. During her tenure at Republic Services, Karol’s key accomplishments included finance transformation, process improvements, pricing execution and achievement of cost savings. Before Republic Services, Karol worked at Continental Airlines as the Director of Finance and at Ernst & Young.
Karol graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Houston and is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Pricing Professional. She is a solution-focused, collaborative Operations Finance Leader with strengths in talent development and process improvements that have helped build high performing teams which resulted in positive business outcomes. As a business partner, she has strong innovative, analytical, and financial skills to help execute revenue growth and cost efficiency goals. Karol is best known for her professionalism and teamwork attitude.
