Compliance Laws & Regulators
Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA)
The Occupational Health and Safety Act assigns responsibility to employers for providing a safe and healthful workplace. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates compliance with the Occupation Health and Safety Act.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was put in place to create national standards for the protection of individually identifiable information by health plans, health care clearinghouses, and health care providers, as well as, the integrity of the medical practice.
Code of Federal Regulations
The Code of Federal Regulations outlines the regulations around the transportation of regulated medical waste. The US Department of Transportation (DOT) oversees compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations.
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Costs creates the legal framework for the appropriate management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste. EPA and the states verify RCRA compliance with these requirements through a comprehensive compliance monitoring program which includes inspecting facilities, reviewing records and taking enforcement action where necessary.
In addition to this, each State has its own regulations enforced by their respective Departments of Health and Environmental Protection that potentially adds another layer of regulation that can be difficult for health facilities to manage.
